Chapter 5

Pavements are usually surfaced by asphalt mixtures or portland cement concrete, as discussed in Chapters 6 and 7.  However, preparation for surfacing involves construction of the subgrade and a base course.  Design of these components depends on the materials to be used and the conditions that the pavement must meet. The following topics will be cover; Pavement Structure, Thickness Design, Subgrade Construction, Granular Base and Subbase Courses, Stabilized Base and Surface Courses, Geosynthetics, The Strategic Highway Research Program, and Inspection and Quality Control.

They are used on all types of roadway – from multiple layers of asphalt concrete on the highest class of highway to thin, dust-control layers on seldom used roads. Portland Cement Concrete

Chapter 7

Concrete combines aggregates, water, and cementing agent, generally portland cement.  Portland Cement is made from limestone and other minerals, which are ground up, mixed, burned in a kiln, and subsequently ground to a fine powder that will harden when mixed with water. The following topics will be covered; Portland Cement, Properties of Portland Cement Concrete, Basic Tests, Admixtures, Supplementary Cementing Materials, Materials, Mix Design, Trial Mixes, High-Strength Concrete, Mixing Placing and Curing, Concrete Pavements, Whitetopping, Inspection and Quality Control, and Special Concretes.
