Engineering Properties of Soils

Chapter 1

One of the first steps in civil engineering design is an investigation of soil conditions at the site of the proposed structure.  The engineering properties of soils are important not only as the foundation for the project but also as a construction material for many structures, including roads, embankments, earth dams, and other types of earth-grading projects.  The following topics will be cover: Soil Types, Mass-Volume Relations, Classification Tests, Soil classification, Soil Water, Soil Strength and Settlement, and Test Procedures.
